nuTonomy, founded by two researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is testing a free taxi-hailing service in Singapore’s one-north business and technology district.
The trial was given the blessing of the Singapore government.
NuTonomy has beaten ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies Inc. by mere days to public road tests of a technology that could revolutionise the transport industry.
The technology allows select Singapore residents to use NuTonomy’s ride-hailing smartphone app to book a ride in self-driving cars – at no cost.
Comprising Renault Zoe and Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicles, the cars employ the NuTonomy’s software which has been integrated with high-performance sensing and computing components.
An engineer from NuTonomy is present during the test rides to observe system performance, and assume control if needed to ensure passenger comfort and safety.
