I’m half deaf.

I usually combine lip reading with hearing to communicate with people. Masks not only muffle voices but also nullify any lip reading.

This is especially bad when paired with plastic screening.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

That would definitely be an issue. Totally. Thank you for opening up about it.

[–]_manicpixie 4 points5 points  (1 child)

No problem.

I’ve always been lucky enough to be able to communicate, now I Know what it’s like to have it harder. Also, it has given me drive to learn asl, especially as my hearing could worsen in time.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That will be a fascinating learning path...!

Good for you...!

Smelling my own bad breath & an increase in acne

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the post far down below in this thread about Hibiclens for acne.

It works!

[–]danman60 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Subjugation to the New World Order

[–]RebelSkumII 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I woke up in surgery, had an awful medical experience, and have a crippling phobia of doctors and surgeons. Needless to say this has not been fun. I manage fine enough but I avoid crowds now more than ever, and not because I give a shit about a cold.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is super-enervating...Big social impacts.

Depressing to me.

[–]xxDuality 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Acne around the mouth area. My gym forces us to keep masks on and when I start sweating wearing a wet mask is so annoying. I’ve noticed pimples grow around my mouth because of it

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen that in one of the articles above.

"Maskne" or something akin.

Total bummer.

[–]binklehoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wearing a wet mask

is essentially wearing a petri dish. there's all sorts of other bacteria and viruses out there.

[–]Vasallo7G 0 points1 point  (1 child)

well...imagine what is going inside your lungs...I go to a gym and no one wears shit...I would show it to the gym owner and tell him that everybody is going to get a lungs infection if he keeps with that policy

[–]i-like-glitter-a-lot -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Thats not how lung infections work lol

[–]captain_teeth33 10 points11 points  (2 children)

The humiliation of being treated like a vector of deadly disease without cause, when others are fostering a false sense of security - crowding indoors - with their poorly functioning and fitting masks.

Put a mask on your dog lady.

[–]Gamerschoice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Incidentally, this was warned about.

University of Minnesota CIDRAP

"We do not recommend requiring the general public who do not have symptoms of COVID-19-like illness to routinely wear cloth or surgical masks because:

There is no scientific evidence they are effective in reducing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission

Their use may result in those wearing the masks to relax other distancing efforts because they have a sense of protection

We need to preserve the supply of surgical masks for at-risk healthcare workers.

Sweeping mask recommendations—as many have proposed—will not reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission, as evidenced by the widespread practice of wearing such masks in Hubei province, China, before and during its mass COVID-19 transmission experience earlier this year. Our review of relevant studies indicates that cloth masks will be ineffective at preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission, whether worn as source control or as PPE."

"There is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of masks by the mass population has any potential benefit. In fact, there's some evidence to suggest the opposite in the misuse of wearing a mask properly or fitting it properly," Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergencies program, said at a media briefing in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hadn't thought of it like that.

The humiliation is real. Absolutely.

[–]The-rushchic 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hot flash + mask not a good combination :)

[–]Gamerschoice 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I realize this isn't exactly what you asked for, but I read an article just the other day, I think from some UK news source where a woman was saying that wearing a mask reminds her of when she was raped, and that it feels like her attacker's hand over her mouth. She has PTSD or something. I'll bet there are more that experience the same panic she feels when compelled to don a mask.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn't seen that article, but when I made this post, I wondered if that would be a serious concern for some people. There are lots of people that have been through trauma and I can't imagine that this whole situation is helping any of them.

Appreciate the share.

[–]kirilski07 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Not sure about cause and effect. But when being in public places and going in and out facilities I often don't pay attention how often I move my ask either taking it of, or covering the nose and how often I touch my nose/finger with my hands, which makes me to believe Im more prone to transmiting bacteria/viruses. And also acne, I've been having acne for half a year now, which sometimes is irritating. I know some of my friends get really bad breakouts. And also I hate when my sunglasses get foggy because all air from mask goes up straight into my eyes.

I'm not against for wearing masks, I can bear with it.. But I think rules are silly and very ineffective. Like when people sit at the table they are suddenly immune to the virus. And the whole pandemic the way it's been handled is just very shady and we are definitely are being told lies by msn.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your experience.

I had an acne issue for a little while and what really got rid of it was a liquid disinfectant/soap called Hibiclens.

You have to be SUPER careful with it...CAN'T GET IT ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR EYES. IT WILL MESS UP YOUR EYES.

The way I used it, was to make a 50/50 solution of Hibiclens and water...and then used cotton balls to rub it on the trouble spots.

Don't super-saturate the cotton balls -- if applying to your face, cuz you don't want to accidentally splash this in your eyes or have it run down from your forehead into your eyes.

I'd wash my face first...the normal way...

And then I'd rub the cotton balls around the areas and then let it dry on my face for about 10 minutes....and then carefully wash it off, making certain I did not splash any in my eyes.

It is powerful stuff. Has a funky smell, but not overpowering once diluted 50/50 with water.

It took about two weeks -- and face was clear as day.

I don't wear a mask for super long hours -- and I'm not sure if it was the mask that triggered it, but the 50/50 diluted Hibiclens absolutely knocked it right out.

I got this advice from a Dermatologist years ago.

It really worked.

(I got the generic store-brand version of Hibiclens from national pharmacy chain -- and it worked just fine -- and was cheaper. It is widely available.)

Just make sure it doesn't get into your eyes!

[–]lalajoneser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t breathe well with the mask . I feel like I’m suffocating . I see people riding in cars with masks on though & that strikes me as funny but wtf do I know ? As the days go by I realize most all that I thought I knew is wrong .

[–]l0pol0po 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I know a guy that obsessively wore a mask and had a mini hand sanitizer on his belt loop I mean like he went above and beyond following all the stuff they say to do guess what? He got it the other day. Me one the other hand I haven't worn one once I wash my hands but not like a clean freak guess what? Haven't gotten it. All mask tell me is everything in the air sticks to it like a magnet and increase risk specially seeing as a virus is smaller than a human skin cell.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Interesting story. Hope he is okay!

[–]l0pol0po 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Yeah he is. As long as you take care of yourself like get sunlight, exercise, eat decent, maybe take some vitamins and so on more than likely you'll be fine butttt the long term is what I'm worried about and drs are just now saying there's a big possibility of that. That was my first hunch is there may be permanent damages that we just don't know yet because it's too soon to call of course.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's good to hear.

Vitamin D, Zinc, Quercitin....and all the rest you said...!

Stay well!

[–]l0pol0po 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To you as well!

[–]TheBluegrassBaron92 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have a close relative that's a teacher. Their mask consistently made their glasses fog up, effecting ability to teach, see, etc. so after wearing eyeglasses for 15 years they switched to contacts. Nothing too negative or drastic but nonetheless a significant life change for someone directly related to masks.

[–]Michalusmichalus 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm a bit jelly how many people forget they're wearing a mask. It always seems to give me a runny nose.

Think about how hard it is to blow or wipe your nose with a mask on! I just stay home.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I fear many people just "stay home" now...

I really hope that will abate someday.

That runny nose thing can be a real problem with any of these masks. Doesn't matter the material. We were mean't to breathe.

[–]Michalusmichalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't be my fault grandma died! Let the damn reindeer do it for all I care. As long as it's not my fault.

[–]anotherschmuck4242 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I do find it difficult to breathe with a mask over my face. And I am usually impaired visually because I have to either remove my glasses or deal with fogging on my glasses constantly. Either way I am not able to see the best.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important points!

[–]i-like-glitter-a-lot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres stuff you can put on your glasses to stop them fogging up. Works really well. I wear glasses everyday and have no issues since getting the stuff.

[–]bond1mandela 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Bad breath, hypoxia, pneumonia.

[–]i-like-glitter-a-lot 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The bad breath was already there. You’re just smelling what everyone else was smelling.

[–]mcayton85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha truth!

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow...Not fun. Not fun.

Very sorry to hear.

[–]john2776 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I hate smelling my own breath all day, even if I chew gum no matter what having to wear a mask all day is kind of stupid, I do it and don’t complain, but I’m not oblivious to the fact that they absolutely don’t do shit.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. Sorry about the experience.

[–]Vasallo7G 1 point2 points  (2 children)

absolutely don’t do shit.

oh but they do....they will make us sick by making us breath what we exhale, its like pushing shit back in the ass but with a gas

[–]binklehoya 1 point2 points  (3 children)

it's polarized people even more

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I think this is an incredibly important issue. Probably among the most damaging -- at least socially. Couldn't agree more.

[–]binklehoya 1 point2 points  (1 child)

meant to add:

as far as how it's affected me, it's much harder to get or give visual cues in grocery stores and public spaces in general.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, totally is.

[–]lightspeed23 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I get a total flare-up allergic reaction around my eyes. I wore a mask for 5hours on a plane and next day one eye was so swollen it was nearly closed and the other eye not much better.

Whenever I wear the mask for more than say an hour I get a worsening of this (start going red and itchy around my eyes) and have to use a special antiexcema prescription cream.

I theorize it's because I wear glasses and my exhalatikn escapes up under my glasses and trapped by them as well.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y-ouch.

Not fun. Not fun at all.

[–]ads196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find wearing a mask makes smoking difficult, which is actually a good thing as it means I smoke less.

[–]SadSoggySandwich 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It gives me acne.

I have asthma and can’t breathe properly in them.

I can’t hear people as well because I read lips.

I am also a sexual assault survivor and if I wear my mask long enough it feels like someone has their hand over my mouth choking me, then I start to panic and it gives me anxiety.

I’m okay with wearing it to the store but it’s rough at work. They also spray down my office with pesticides at the end of my shift which sends me into an asthma attack.

Annnd downvoted why? Screw off shills.

[–]ThyKingdomCome1111[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Such b.s.

As for the Mask-acne...take a look for the comment I wrote about Hibiclens in this thread.

Worked wonders for me.

(Don't get it in your eyes!! Will badly mess them up.)
