Uniforms are compulsory for school students in the UAE. All public schools follow a unified school uniform for students of primary section. The unified appearance aims to provide a sense of equality and justice amongst all pupils, regardless of backgrounds or social status and to manifest the UAE's national and cultural identity. The school uniform includes a dishdasha for boys and a headscarf and a long skirt and blouse for the girls. Mandatory kits include accessories such as socks and shoes for each section for regular and sportswear.
The design of the uniform of male students of grades 9 to 12 of government schools has been changed for the academic year 2020-2021. The new uniform consists of a white T-shirt bearing the Emirati school crest on the chest and navy pinstripe trousers. The new uniform is mandatory and it replaces the earlier school uniform which consisted of a dishdasha (kandura) and a headscarf (ghutra).
The new design of the uniform is in line with the objectives of Ministry of Education to provide a safe environment that supports and stimulates learning in accordance with a modern educational philosophy.
